Topic 7: ‘FLOSS futures’

As computational techniques develop, I could see a lot of automatisation happening in the Strudel and even live music coding community. I think a lot of the issues that are currently open in the GitHub for Strudel will be able to get solved by different types of Artificial Intelligence in the next couple of years. Especially the ones that are currently labeled as “bug”, or where the code is not working because of an external factor (such as an API). I think the community will still be working to improve the project even if AI’s will be helping. The community might put more focus on the creativity of the project instead of on the technical problems. I certainly think that the community will be tight and constantly growing as it involves a project that is created out of passion. The project is a tool that can be used by musicians or coders interested in music. I do not think the contributors or the community of the people who use it will change even with the computational techniques developing, because they enjoy doing it and are using the platform out of interest and genuine interest.

One challenge that could be encountered by this community is the potential rise of AI music tools. There could be a lot of AI tools that completely automise the process of writing music and that have similar outcomes like Strudel. Even if that happens, there are still going to be a lot of users who enjoy the whole process and enjoy coding everything themselves and experimenting with it.
